When you answer an emergency call from an English speaker, first say who you are. Use a calm and clear voice. Example: 'Hello, this is the emergency service. How can I help you?' Then ask for the location and what happened. Always speak slowly and repeat if necessary.

To give instructions, use the imperative: verb first, no subject. Say 'Press the wound firmly' not 'You press the wound'. For negative commands, put 'Don't' before the verb: 'Don't move your leg'. Other examples: 'Lie down on your back', 'Stay still'.

After giving an instruction, check that the patient understood. Ask: 'Do you understand?' or 'Can you repeat that?' If the patient seems confused, repeat slowly using simple words. Reassure them: 'Help is on the way', 'Stay on the phone with me'.

For bleeding: 'Apply pressure with a clean cloth.' For choking: 'Cough hard' and 'Bend forward.' For an unconscious person: 'Check if they are breathing' and 'Put them in the recovery position.' If no breathing, say 'Start CPR now.' Always ask if the patient is alone.
